Cardio 40+

Love your heart and keep it beating for many happy decades to come.

Friday evening. Dinner with friends. The wine flows and the chargrilled steak smells amazing. What could dessert be? Of course, you know none of this is going to help your gently expanding waistline. But that’s what happens after 40, isn’t it? You are not unfit, you still run and go to the gym. Weight gain is not even the problem, it’s just that unless you really look after yourself, it’s hard to stay in shape. And life is busy. Commutes are long. Work is intense. ‘Another glass? Yes please.

Unfortunately, while our 40s and beyond may be a time of incredible confidence and ease in how we move through the world, our bodies are simply not as resilient. And modern lifestyles don’t help. Overwork, stress, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, pollution, lack of exercise and inadequate diets are associated with chronic, low-level inflammation. What happens is that the body feels under threat. This signals an ’emergency’ healing response – swelling, the deployment of fluids; of white blood cells, hormones and nutrients. This is miraculous when there is an acute injury or illness to heal. But when the crisis is low-level and ongoing, we end up with an endocrine system gone awry.

For scientists, it’s a chicken and egg scenario – which comes first, the inflammation or the illness? But nobody disputes that chronic inflammation is associated with insulin spikes, higher cholesterol levels, arterial hardening and Ireland’s no. 1 killer, heart disease. While we generally think of heart disease as a man’s disease, it kills 5000 Irish women a year. The good news is that it’s 90% preventable.

But how? Exercise helps. Consult your doctor before you start any new routine. There is also much talk nowadays of anti-inflammatory diets. Essentially, these resemble the classic, healthy Mediterranean diet – low in red meat, high in fish, nuts, pulses, whole grains, spices and fresh fruit and vegetables. Foods which are high in Omega 3 fatty acids are also key. Think oily fish such as salmon, trout and mackerel; avocadoes, walnuts and olive and canola oils.

Of course, we don’t all eat 100% healthy diets all the time. In fact, only a third of Irish people eat fish at all and few of those who do meet the two weekly portions recommendation. We don’t always have as much time and opportunity to exercise as we’d like. Many of us proud warriors of middle age have already fought a lot of battles and we carry pre-existing conditions which need extra care.
