FEEL 20 YEARS YOUNGER with Udo’s Oil

“Are you getting enough Omega 3 fats? Probably not” says Nutritionist Sarah Brereton. Here’s why you should up your essential oil intake.

On average, people only get one-sixth of the Omega 3 fats they need. This is due to lots of factors, such as poor food choices, but is mainly down to food processing. As these essential fats can turn rancid quickly, most food processing is designed to remove these vital nutrients to increase shelf-life. Omega 3 and 6 were discovered in the 1920s and deemed as essential a decade later. We cannot make them and without Omega 3 and 6 we would die.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend in Ireland.

Udo’s is a unique blend of certified organic seed oils incorporating Omega 3, 6 and 9 in the ratio of 2:1:1. Many people I meet are aware of Udo’s Oil, or have taken it, but still might not be aware of all its wonderful ingredients. Udo’s Oil contains high quality, organic, unrefined oils in addition to other vital ingredients. Organic Flax Oil supplies Omega 3 fatty acids; organic sunflower and sesame oils provide Omega 6 fatty acids; unrefined evening primrose oil supplies Omega 6 and GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid), plus rice germ and oat germ oil which are all high in natural oil soluble phytonutrients. Omega 9 comes from sunflower, flax, rice and rice bran oil.

Udo’s Oil also contains coconut oil which has antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial qualities and contains Omega 7. Not forgetting lecithin and vitamin E which are great for the liver and provide antioxidants respectively.

Omega 3 gets a lot of attention, but let’s not forget Omega 6. It has lots of health benefits too, such as protecting our heart from CVD, supporting brain function, maintaining healthy bones, improving skin conditions, easing PMS and balancing hormones. There is a belief that Omega 6 leads to inflammation. However, research by Dr Harris from the Sanford School of Medicineshowed that Arachidonic Acid (AA) and Linolenic Acid (LA) also give rise to anti-inflammatory molecules. This recent research shows the anti-inflammatory actions of Gamma Linolenic Acid which is converted from LA and is the key component in evening primrose oil in Udo’s Oil.

This organic and gluten-free oil, which is packaged in dark bottles to protect the delicate oils from heat, light and oxygen, is an excellent choice for every cell in the body to keep us young inside and out. One key benefit of taking Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) in the form of Udo’s Oil is maintenance of healthy joints.

EFAs are necessary to produce secretions that lubricate our joints. They help our muscles and joints recover better from injury. They are also used to transport the minerals into our bones and to build healthy membranes. This is especially important for the cells which line our digestive tract to prevent undigested food entering our cells and setting up allergic reactions which can cause Rheumatoid Arthritis and other conditions. EFAs also slow down the rate at which our tummy empties – this will enhance proper digestion and ensure proteins are digested.

Athletes have noted that bruises and sprains heal faster when they include Omega 3 in their diets. When taking essential fats, healing time is reduced by one third. EFAs in Udo’s Oil are hugely beneficial for the heart. Omega 3 can lower triglycerides by 65%. It can also make our platelets less sticky. Studies have shown an increase in good cholesterol (HDL) production and a lowering of lipoprotein Lp(a), which is another risk factor for heart disease. We really need to ‘know our numbers’ from age 40 onwards – fasting blood sugar, cholesterol ratio, vitamin D levels, weight, waist measurements and homocysteine levels.

Let’s not forget our largest organ; our skin. EFAs are our natural internal moisturisers, and these oils contribute to soft, smooth skin by forming a barrier against moisture loss. Omega 3, 6 and 9 prevent dehydration and inflammation and I recommend them to help both dry skin and oily skin. They’re also great for problem skin like acne, eczema and psoriasis as they balance the sebum in the pores. Add Udo’s Oil to your smoothies, salads and pasta. Start gradually and increase your dose to three dessertspoons per days; here’s to the next 20 years!
